This year’s club gathering and rally in Ashburton brought 30 members with 10 Armstrong Siddeley cars and a couple of “moderns” and rentals together for a fun weekend of driving, clue-spotting, touring the region, and eating rather well! A smaller group stayed on and headed for Hanmer Springs on Monday, ready for a drive the length of the Molesworth Track and then the Taylor Pass to Blenheim the following day. That event (see the header picture on page 1) was exhausting but exhilarating. The first section in particular proved very daunting, with a quite steep climb along a track with heavy corrugations that were doubtless brought about by the major storms of 2-3 weeks earlier. Our day was thankfully dry, but dealing with the aftermath of the bad weather on that one section of track was quite enough of a challenge for one day.
Once the mid-morning cloud lifted and the road levelled off, we were treated to some magnificent scenery, and more than a little dust that got everywhere … and we wouldn’t have missed it for anything!
Next year's gathering will be "somewhere north of Taupō", most likely in early November.
